Standing tall at 17 hands, Shorty is our gentle giant – though don’t tell him that! Known as the “Sergeant at Arms” to our HSES Sir Ed, this much-loved boy doesn’t quite realise just how big (or strong!) he really is.
Shorty’s journey to the sanctuary was one of heartbreak and hope. He was surrendered within seconds of being put to sleep. We cancelled the euthanasia (they didn’t want to cover the cost) and immediately started treatment – including 10 litres of Hartmans fluid intravenously. In that moment, his body began to fight back.
When Shorty arrived, he was malnourished, freezing, and battling a terrible infection in his hind leg. He was in a bad way. But with six months of dedicated care, warmth, feed, and veterinary treatment, Shorty slowly came back to health.
Today, he is thriving – a friendly, kind horse but dwho keeps watch over his paddock mates.
